Welcome to Pledge Nature Reserve

Our peaceful reserve, informally known as the Green Heart of Knysna, is named after our heart-shaped valleys and ridges that can be seen from above. Pledge Nature Reserve is a 10-hectare declared nature reserve located in the heart of Knysna, easily accessible at only 200 meters from the Main Road.

Leaving the bustle of town behind and finding the tranquility of rustling leaves, babbling streams, and birdsong within minutes is nothing short of magical.

Explore the Beauty

Picnic sites are scattered along scenic, easy walking trails, and benches are conveniently placed for peaceful reflection or rest. The approximately 5 km of walking trails will lead you past lower-lying ponds, streams, forests, and fynbos, gradually ascending towards a viewpoint where you can enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the Knysna Estuary and Heads. The reserve represents the natural heritage of the greater Knysna region, boasting over 350 species of plants and 101 species of birds. Take your time to fully explore this local gem, as it has become a popular site for locals, tour groups, guided walks, and short visits to the Knysna forests.

Rich Biodiversity

Pledge Nature Reserve falls within the Cape Floral Kingdom, the richest floral kingdom per area unit. Within the reserve, you will find three main vegetation types: Groenvlei Coastal Forest in the valleys, Knysna Enon Fynbos and Hoogekraal Sandplate Fynbos along the ridges, and Groot Brak River floodplain vegetation surrounding the streams and ponds. Additionally, sections of Southern Afrotemperate Forest can be found in the valleys. These vegetation types are all endemic to the region and are an integral part of the natural heritage of the Southern Cape. We are committed to actively managing the reserve to ensure the continuity of these unique species. To date, we have recorded 367 plant species and 101 bird species within the reserve.

Research Opportunities

Pledge Nature Reserve presents a significant opportunity for research on small mammals, reptiles, and amphibians, especially within the context of the surrounding urban landscape. Casual sightings of various species, including Cape Grysbok, Cape Porcupine, Southern Vervet Monkey, mongoose, spotted genet, and a breeding colony of francolin, have already been noted. Many other species have been observed in and around the town close to the reserve. Join us in discovering more about the diverse wildlife that calls this reserve home.
